Scientific Trip: Forest Modeling
To enforce the practical side in the curriculum of the Department of Forestry at CAES, the fourth-year bachelor students were taken to the beautiful forest areas of Zawita. Regarding the ‘Forest Modeling’ subject, this scientific trip aimed to develop students' skills in taking samples and collecting data, on 31.10.2024.
Under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Hadeat Obeyed and Assist. Lecturer Abdulaziz Jameel Younis, many topics were discussed on the work site. The most important aspects were creating plots, calculating the plot area, and extracting data from the plots. Students were mainly taught to exercise in measuring the following attributes of the tree:
- Diameter of the trees (by using caliper and diameter tape).
- Crown diameter (by using projection line).
- Age of the trees by using five different methods.
- Bark thickness (using bark gauge).
- Number of trees in the plot.
- Height of the trees (Haga altimeter and Sunnto clinometer).
- Basal area.
Lastly, the students expressed their thankfulness for this exploratory opportunity!
