Seminar Held on Substance Use Disorder Prevention and Psychosocial Support
The College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences at the University of Duhok hosted a seminar titled "Understanding Substance Use Disorder Among University Students: Prevention, Early Identification, and Psychosocial Support." The sessions, which took place on May 4 and May 18, 2026, were presented by Dr. Nawzad Sami, Psychiatrist, and Mr. Karwan Issa, Social Researcher.
The seminar focused on increasing awareness among students and academic staff regarding substance use disorder (SUD) and its multifaceted impact on psychological, social, and academic performance. The presenters provided scientific and practical insights into common substances of abuse, risk factors prevalent among young adults, and the critical warning signs that require early intervention.
A significant portion of the event was dedicated to reducing the social stigma surrounding addiction and mental health. The speakers emphasized the importance of healthy coping strategies and stress management in maintaining student wellbeing. Furthermore, the seminar highlighted the specialized services provided by the Institute of Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology (IPP) and the Addiction Center at the University of Duhok, including clinical assessment, psychotherapy, psychosocial support, and rehabilitation.
By the conclusion of the sessions, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the clinical features of SUD and the vital role of prevention strategies. The event successfully reinforced the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment through community awareness and accessible mental health services.
